Netflix has so far ordered a 10-episode season for direct adaptation, with Steven Maeda (CSI: Miami, Lost) and Matt Owens (Luke Cage, Agents of SHIELD) serving as showrunners.

Production on One Piece was originally scheduled to begin in the summer of 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa, at the Cape Town Film Studios to be precise, after it was first announced in January 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Godoy, Maeda, and Owens are seen standing on a stage that closely resembles the Straw Hat Pirates’ first ship, the Going Merry. You can also check out concept art for Miss Labduck (Alvida’s ship), Going Merry, and Baratie (Sanji’s alma mater). We also watched a time-lapse video of the Baratie build, and to be honest, the attention to detail on set was impressive.

Plot

Season 1 of the live-action version of One Piece will cover the East Blue chapter of the manga. East Blue is a part of the sea in the One Piece manga map and is where the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, begins his journey as a pirate. A devil fruit called Gum-Gum (Gomu Gomu no Mi) that he ate when he was young, caused his rubbery body to bend and stretch at will.

Inspired by his childhood hero Shanks, with his head held high and his eyes full of dreams, Luffy will become the “Pirate King” by finding One Piece, the secret treasure of the legendary pirate Gol D. Roger.

However, One Piece is said to be hidden beyond the Grand Line, and its journey to the sea is dangerous. In Season 1, we meet fan favorites like Roronoa Zoro, the master of the three swords style. Nami, an aspiring crew navigator who was once a thief; Usopp, a sniper who is learning to be brave. and Sanji, the team’s future chef who falls for every woman he sees.
